Hi there. Thank you so much for this wonderful article, it describes my life perfectly! I have spent the last 2-3 years struggling with binge eating disorder, and over that time it went from an after-work, evening "slip-up" to a daily routine that has taken me from a fit, healthy, energetic 120 lbs to 170 in a matter of months. I too did 3 weeks in an in-patient clinic for my binge eating, but never felt ANY better and still had horrible horrible cravings (On the menu every day was tons of wheat and dairy products). After I got out of the hospital, I went to see an acupuncturist and alternative doctor who told me I needed to cut out gluten and dairy from my diet. This was the first time I had ever heard such advice. I thought, I can't be gluten and dairy intolerant, I eat those things all the time! But after having done some research online, I realize there is a lot more to this argument than I ever thought! So I've decided I'm definitely going to give up gluten and wheat. I know these two foods are definite sensitivities for me, as my binges are almost always some combination of cereal and milk, chocolate, pastries, and big baguette sandwiches. But I wanted to know if there was any way to test for food sensitivities (not just allergies) to know for sure the foods I need to avoid? Did you take any test or did you just assume you were most sensitive to wheat and dairy? Are those the only two foods you have stopped eating? What about sugar, is that allowed? Thanks so much, I have been struggling with this for so long and finally feel like I have found something that makes sense!

I believe in a technique called saturation: saturating myself with information about healing and nutrition through reading, listening to mp3's, watching youtube videos that inspire me. Kind of like creating my own positive healing incubator.
If I had to pick the number one most transformative thing in helping me stop eating my trigger foods it has been meditation.

This so describes my life! Thank you for the article. For some reason, although I have known for some time what I need to do to improve my situation, I just can't do it. After an awful week of bingeing, I decided today to leave out the trigger foods which I am clearly intolerant to. I decided to go to the coast instead to walk in the nice weather. I made it about 20 minutes into the drive before I had stopped to buy trigger foods, which then led to an almighty binge and coming back home. It sounds very weak and silly when I write it like that, and it is. But in the moment the compulsion is so strong and I just go into auto pilot. How did you get over the initial period of abstinence from your trigger foods? Many thanks...

Thank you for pointing out that people can focus on what they can eat...people hear our four-year-old son is allergic to wheat, eggs and soy and ask us, "how do you do it?" I always tell them it's easy - there are many more foods that he can eat than he can't. While it is a simplification, I want him to hear that he is okay, and that he learns to focus on what can be done, and not be debilitated by his dietary needs.
Shopping for a gluten-free family has reinforced the idea of shopping around the edges of the grocery store for our family - the main things we buy at the store are fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and yogurt. It has made us all become better eaters and avoid all the processed, wheat and soy filled junk foods that our bodies don't really need. I find it amazing to realize that the majority of the food in a grocery store is not necessary for survival - as a society, we have gotten used to it.
I look forward to reading more of your gluten-free articles - thank you for getting the information out there!
